Homework Time In Your House Gets Under Your Skin?
Helping your child do their homework irritates you. I can understand you, you have your job (you leave the house early and don’t come back until 4:30) and they have their job (school). Just like they don’t help you with your job, why should you have to help them with theirs! Well it’s not excactly like this, you are their parent, you want the best for them, and you want to help them, it’s just…..
In this article I hope to show you 3 ways to help your child be less dependent on you and to make homework time in your house much easier .
1. Make sure that the physical setup of the house is conducive for doing homework. For instance, make sure that there is a desk or table for them to work on. (It takes much more time to write a report sitting on a bed than to write it on a hard surface). Make sure that there is place with pens, pencils, and paper. (So they won’t spend half the night looking for these things.) When they do their work YOU shouldn’t talk on the phone or play the TV where it will distract them. Remember the easier it is for them to study the easier it is for them to study without your help.
2. Review their homework assignment, AFTER they finished it. Don’t do their assignment with them or for them. Firstly, this is precisely what irritates you. Secondly, if you do the work for them then they won’t benefit from the assignment. It is better for you to look over their assignments a few times a week, not even every night, in order to detect where their weaknesses are. If you do spot some, then discuss it with the teacher to see if it is possible to get extra help in that area. This little investment of time can save you lot’s of time in the long run. Not only will it save you time but if you catch the difficulty in bud you will save your child from and so much suffering from your child.
3. Study partners/groups. Speak to your child’s teacher if she knows of other parents who are also having problems with homework time in their house. If so, see if you can pair up with one or two of them and to rotate the house where they will study. Each child will help the other ones finish the assignment. You won’t be a hundred percent free on the nights that the group studies in your house. But even on those nights you will only have to make occasional glances that they are really working and not just gossiping and fooling around. This is certainly much better than sitting with them the whole time.
You want only the best for your child and you want that they succeed in school. Follow the guidelines above and they will be able to succeed even without you helping them the whole time.
